The State Board of Education was established by an amendment to the Ohio Constitution in November 1953. The Board is authorized to provide general supervision of the system of public education in Ohio. The first meeting of the State Board was held in January 1956.
CONSTITUTION OF THE STATE OF OHIO ARTICLE VI SECTION 4 “There shall be a state Board of education which shall be selected in such manner and for such terms as shall be provided by law. There shall be a superintendent of public instruction, who shall be appointed by the state Board of education. The respective powers and duties of the Board and of the superintendent shall be prescribed by law.”
State Board of Education meetings generally begin on the second Monday of each month. The Board’s business meeting usually is held the next day. Members of the public have opportunities to address the Board during the Chapter 119 hearing and during Public Participation.
